If you're paying for your child's coaching classes, your bill just jumped. The government ruled that coaching for classes 5–12 counts as 'supplementary education', not formal schooling, which means it now attracts 18% GST. On a ₹50,000 annual coaching fee, you'll now pay ₹59,000. That's ₹9,000 extra per year, per child.
What this means for you
- If your child attends coaching, expect bills to rise 18% from here — that's ₹1,800 on every ₹10,000 you spend
- Many coaching centres may absorb part of this initially, but most will pass it on within 2–3 months
- Your annual education budget needs a revision — add ₹750–1,000 per month if you're currently spending ₹5,000–6,000 monthly on tuition
What you can do
- Ask your coaching centre upfront if they're adding GST now or from next billing cycle — don't be surprised mid-month
- If you prepay annually, check if paying before the GST kicks in saves you the extra cost (some centres may honour old rates for advance payments)
This won't reverse. Factor it into your education spend from this month onwards.
