If you earn close to ₹25,000 a month, your salary slip is about to look different.
EPFO just raised its wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 — the first revision in 12 years — making EPF mandatory for about 51 lakh more workers.
That's roughly ₹3,000 a month moving from your hand into your retirement account, matched by your employer.
What this means for you
- Your take-home pay could drop by ₹2,500–3,000 a month if you're newly covered — but that money isn't lost, it's building your retirement.
- Your employer now has to match this contribution too, effectively doubling what's saved for you every month.
- Over 20 years, this extra ₹3,000/month at typical EPF returns (8.25%) can add ₹15–20 lakh to your retirement corpus.
What you can do
- Check your next payslip for the new EPF line item and adjust your monthly budget for the lower in-hand amount.
- If you're a contract worker or freelancer crossing ₹25,000, ask your employer if this now applies to you.
A smaller paycheck today is building a stronger retirement tomorrow — even if you didn't ask for it.
