How Much Gold Is Too Much?

Most Indian households already own gold — jewellery from weddings, coins from festivals, maybe a family heirloom. The question isn't whether to own gold, it's whether you hold too much of it as an "investment."
Financial planners suggest keeping 5–10% of your total investable assets in gold, not counting jewellery you'll never sell. If your savings and investments add up to ₹10 lakh, that's ₹50,000–₹1 lakh in gold, ideally via Sovereign Gold Bonds or Gold ETFs.
Cross 15–20% and your portfolio starts behaving like a gold fund, not a balanced one.

What you can do

Gold isn't the problem — too much of it sitting idle is. Move the extra into SGBs or equity funds and put that money to work.
