HRA Exemption: How Rent Cuts Your Tax

Pay rent every month and never think about tax? HRA exemption could quietly save you thousands — if you claim it right.

Say your basic salary is ₹40,000/month, HRA is ₹20,000/month, and you pay ₹18,000/month rent in a metro city. Your exemption is the lowest of three: actual HRA (₹2.4 lakh/year), rent minus 10% of basic (₹1.68 lakh), or 50% of basic for metros (₹2.4 lakh). The lowest wins — so ₹1.68 lakh becomes tax-free, saving you ₹33,600 to ₹50,400 a year depending on your tax slab.
