ITR forms changed — here's what to check

If you received a gift from family or sold a piece of rural land this year, the new ITR form has a separate section just for you — and it's easy to miss.

The Income Tax Department added this box to the AY 2026-27 form to capture amounts that aren't technically your income — things like a gift from parents, or money from selling agricultural land outside city limits.

You don't owe extra tax on these. But if you skip this section or put the number in the wrong box, your return could get flagged and your refund delayed by weeks or even months.

What this means for you

• Received a gift from a relative this year? You now report it in a dedicated section — not mixed in with your income.
• Sold rural agricultural land? That amount goes into its own field — leaving it blank can trigger a mismatch notice from the tax department.
• No extra tax either way — this is purely about reporting it in the right place.

What you can do

• Before you file, open the AY 2026-27 ITR utility and look for the new "exempt receipts" or "non-income receipts" section — fill it in even if the amount is small.
• If you use a CA or tax filing portal, tell them about any gifts or rural land proceeds so they don't miss it.
