The July 31 deadline is close, and the urge to just get it done is real. But a rushed filing can mean your refund gets stuck for months — or worse, a defective return notice that makes you file all over again. Two minutes of checking now saves weeks of frustration later.
What this means for you
- Your refund: Even a small number mismatch can hold up your refund while the tax department raises a query — and refund delays of 3–6 months are common when returns get flagged.
- TDS mismatch: Your Form 26AS shows exactly how much tax was already deducted from your salary or FD interest by your employer or bank. If the figure you've entered in your ITR doesn't match, your return gets flagged. Cross-check it once.
- Wrong bank account: Filing with an incorrect account number or IFSC code means your refund goes nowhere. Confirm your pre-validated account is active on the income tax portal.
- FD interest income: Interest earned on fixed deposits is taxable and must be declared — missing it can trigger a notice even after filing.
What you can do right now
- Log into the income tax portal, open Form 26AS, and make sure your salary and TDS figures match your Form 16 exactly — they should be identical.
- Confirm your pre-validated bank account details (including IFSC) are correct so your refund reaches you without delay.
You're almost done — just make sure the last step is also the right one.
