NSDL

National Securities Depository Limited is India's first and larger central depository, the other being CDSL. It holds securities electronically, issues the Consolidated Account Statement, and settles trades on behalf of investors whose demat accounts sit with it.

A demat account number starting with the letters IN generally indicates an NSDL account. Which depository an investor lands on depends entirely on which one their broker is affiliated with, not on any choice made by the investor.
