Could you have forgotten bank accounts, old FDs or investments?
Published September 20, 2026
An old savings account you opened years ago. An FD that matured but was never claimed. Investments you made and eventually forgot about.
It happens more often than you might think.
When you have financial accounts spread across different institutions, it's possible to lose track of money that still belongs to you.
Where should you start looking?
Begin with your existing financial records.
Review old bank statements, emails, fixed deposit receipts, investment statements and tax documents.
You may find references to accounts or investments that you no longer actively track.
If you remember the bank or financial institution, contact it through its official channels.
Can you search for forgotten bank deposits in India?
Yes.
The Reserve Bank of India provides the UDGAM portal, which helps users search for eligible unclaimed deposits across participating banks.
You can access it here:
Finding an unclaimed deposit doesn't automatically mean the money will be transferred to you.
You'll still need to follow the relevant bank's verification and claim process.
What about forgotten mutual funds or other investments?
Mutual funds, shares, insurance policies and retirement accounts may have different processes for tracing and recovering unclaimed assets.
Once you identify something, document its ownership, current status and estimated value.
The takeaway: Your net worth should reflect the assets you actually own, including those you may have forgotten. Reviewing old financial records can help you build a more complete picture of your wealth.
