The Complete Net Worth Framework for Indians
The Complete Net Worth Framework for Indians
October 7, 2026

Net Worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. For Indians, that includes EPF, PPF, NPS, property, gold, investments and cash, minus home, car, education and credit-card loans. It is a snapshot of your financial position today, not a verdict on you.

‍

What is Net Worth?

Net Worth is the total value of everything you own minus everything you owe.

Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities

If you want the basic formula and a simple walkthrough, start with How to Calculate Your NetWorth in India. This article goes further: it gives you a complete method for building a Net Worth you can trust.

‍

Why does your Net Worth number usually feel wrong?

Most people don't have a money problem. They have a visibility problem.

Your money sits in a salary account, an old bank account, a demat account, a few mutual fund folios, two EPF accounts from past employers, a PPF and some gold at home. No single statement shows all of it, so the number in your head is a guess, and it is usually too low.

‍

What is the FOLO Net Worth Framework?

The FOLO Net Worth Framework is a five-step method for building and using your Net Worth: See, Organise, Protect, Manage, Grow. It is a FOLO framework, not a regulatory standard.

  1. See: What do I own? What do I owe? List every asset and liability in one place.
  2. Organise: How is my Net Worth spread? Group by liquidity and type.
  3. Protect: What if something goes wrong? Check emergency cover, insurance and nominees.
  4. Manage: What needs my attention? Review loans, idle cash, overlaps and deadlines.
  5. Grow: Is the number improving? Track the trend, not just the total.

‍

What should you include in Net Worth?

Assets are things you own that have monetary value.

  • Cash and bank: savings accounts, current accounts, cash.
  • Market-linked: stocks, mutual funds, vested RSUs and ESOPs. See how to count ESOPs on your Net Worth statement.
  • Fixed income: FDs, RDs, bonds.
  • Retirement: EPF, PPF, NPS.
  • Physical: home, land, gold, SGBs.
  • Other: insurance with surrender or maturity value, private investments.

Liabilities are amounts you owe: home loan, car loan, education loan, personal loan, credit-card outstanding, loans from family, and your share of any joint loan.

‍

How do you organise your Net Worth?

Organising means grouping assets by how quickly you can use them. Two people can each have ₹1 crore of Net Worth and be in very different positions. One may have it in mutual funds and deposits. The other may have it in a flat and EPF.

Group your assets into:

  • Liquid: savings, liquid funds, listed shares, equity funds.
  • Restricted: EPF, PPF, NPS.
  • Semi-liquid: gold, some deposits.
  • Illiquid: property, private investments.

This grouping is the basis of Liquid Net Worth, which many people find more useful than the total.

‍

How do you protect your Net Worth?

Your Net Worth is only as strong as its weakest point. Ask three questions:

  1. Do I have emergency cover? Emergency cover is the number of months of expenses your cash, savings and breakable deposits can pay for. Many planners suggest 3 to 6 months, more if your income is irregular (planning guideline, not a rule).
  2. Is my insurance matched to my dependents and loans? See "How much life insurance cover is enough?" in the Net Worth ratios guide.
  3. Do all accounts have nominees?

‍

How do you manage your Net Worth?

Look for what needs attention:

  • A loan whose interest rate is higher than what your investments are likely to earn
  • Cash sitting idle
  • Multiple funds doing the same job
  • Old accounts you've forgotten

‍

How do you grow your Net Worth?

Your Net Worth grows through three levers:

  • Saving more (positive cash flow)
  • Investing well (asset growth)
  • Reducing liabilities (loan repayment)

Track it every quarter. Direction matters more than any single reading. If your Net Worth is below zero right now, read Negative Net Worth: What It Means and How to Recover.

‍

What does a worked example look like?

Neha, 34, Pune (illustrative figures)

Assets: ₹133 lakh

  • Home (market value): ₹85 lakh
  • EPF + PPF: ₹22 lakh
  • Mutual funds + stocks: ₹14 lakh
  • Savings + FD: ₹7 lakh
  • Gold: ₹5 lakh

Liabilities: ₹43.5 lakh

  • Home loan: ₹40 lakh
  • Car loan: ₹3 lakh
  • Credit card: ₹0.5 lakh

Net Worth = ₹133L − ₹43.5L = ₹89.5 lakh

Of Neha's ₹133L in assets, ₹85L is a home. That tells you far more than the total does, which is why Step 2 matters.

‍

What does Net Worth not tell you?

Net Worth does not show how much you earn, how much you spend, or how easily you can access your money. Read it alongside Net Worth ratios, Liquid Net Worth and cash flow.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I calculate Net Worth?

Quarterly suits most people. Monthly helps if you're paying down debt or investing actively.

‍

Should my home be included in Net Worth?

Yes, as an asset, with any home loan as a liability. Many people also track a version without the primary home, to see their investable wealth.

‍

Is Net Worth the same as wealth?

No. Net Worth is a measurable number. Wealth is broader and includes security, time and choice.

‍

Is a car part of Net Worth?

It can be, at current resale value, which is usually much lower than the purchase price.

‍

Methodology note

Values are at current market value, not purchase price. Property is at a realistic resale estimate. Vested ESOPs/RSUs are at estimated post-tax value. Unvested grants are tracked separately. Examples are illustrative, not FOLO user data.
